House completes education, breaks until Sunday

After several hours of debate tonight, the Texas House finished work on Article III, the education article, of House Bill 1 without repairing any of the damage inflicted on the public schools.

Representatives will come back on Sunday to debate the remaining articles and vote on the bill. If you haven’t already done so (or even if you have) please call your state representative and urge him or her to vote against final passage of the bill. You can leave your message on office voice mail.

House Bill 1 cuts $7.8 billion from the public schools and, with it, tens of thousands of school district jobs. Kids will be crammed into overcrowded classrooms, some neighborhood schools will be closed and educational quality will be diminished.

When you call your legislators, demand that they spend all of the Rainy Day Fund ($9.4 billion) and find other revenue to avoid crippling budget cuts to education and other important public services
