Despite COVID-19 waivers, teachers still can be subject to T-TESS appraisals

Although the governor has waived all annual academic assessment requirements for this school year, and the U.S. Department of Education has waived accountability reporting requirements, Texas teachers still may be subject to T-TESS appraisals and appraisal ratings.

A district can still choose to evaluate a teacher based on the completed aspects of the appraisal system during school closures AND can use these completed aspects to justify non-renewal. Teachers cannot demand a second observation but CAN demand a second appraisal (but based only on the same existing, incomplete data).

Teachers also can appeal or otherwise challenge a district’s decisions. Here is a more detailed TSTA analysis of the Texas Education Agency’s directive.
