TSTA: Students will suffer the consequences of SB 8

Texas State Teachers Association President Rita Haecker issued the following statement on final passage of the conference committee report on SB 8, legislation that will permanently allow school districts to cut teacher pay, furlough teachers and weaken contract protections for teachers:

“For the first time in 60 years, the Legislature decided to cut funding for public schools, and that $5.3 billion education cut has been used as an excuse for the SB8 effort to cut teacher pay and strip teachers’ contract rights.

“Ultimately, our students will suffer the consequences of SB8 because the bill will make it harder to attract qualified teachers and keep the best teachers in the classroom.”

(Note: The $5.3 billion cut includes $4 billion reduction in school district formula funding plus $1.3 billion in cuts to discretionary grants.)
