TSTA this morning appeared before the Senate Finance Committee to testify against a voucher bill, Senate Bill 1847 by Sen. Lucio. The measure was left pending in committee.
Senate Bill 1847 would provide a tax credit to business entities that make donations to educational assistance organizations. The educational assistance organizations award scholarships to eligible students to attend private and parochial schools. The bill would take tax dollars that would have funded public education and funnel those funds to private schools. TSTA noted that funding for public education will be drastically cut over the next biennium and that this voucher bill would only exacerbate the problem.
